Since this was filmed in our very own State Theatre, at least part of the
enjoyment to be had in this DVD is trying to spot people you know in the
cutaways (hi, Jane!). However, even if you don't know any of the sold-out
crowd, you may well know at least some of the routine: the show ran for eight
or so performances in 2008, and the 2009 tour also drew heavily on this material.
And that material is astonishingly good, for the most part. Sure, Moran spends
more time than is absolutely necessary on the Differences Between Men and
Women, but the joys are in the asides as he holds forth on the meaning of life
("...school, work, gardening, gardening, gardening, death") and the failures of
politics, religion, science and technology to give any comfort as we skid to
the grave. His on-stage character might be becoming more and more like hisBlack Books character Bernard Black, but anyone who takes the current
generation to task about their profligate use of the adjective "random" should
be lionised, surely?
