For anyone who missed this at the cinemas – on the not-unreasonable grounds that hey, didn't Borat do this already? – then be advised that Sacha Baron Cohen's follow-up is follows a similar thread, but ups the ante in almost every regard.
There's a plot - disgraced Austrian fashionista goes to the US to reinvent himself - but it's just there to provide a framework upon which to hang a series of set pieces where the gormless, cartoonishly gay character gets on America's nerves. From unveiling his black foster son/accessory on a Springer-style show to challenging a self-defence expert with dildos, there are few moments that aren't laugh-out-loud funny. Of course, there are also many moments where one wonders how close Cohen is to getting himself killed (such as the climactic cage match), while other moments are exquisitely uncomfortable - as when a wistful Bruno tells his hunting companions that the stars remind him of all the hot guys there are in the world. Yes, it's poking fun at easy targets, but Cohen does so in the most entertainingly difficult way possible. Ellison Ward
