Axl (Fernando
Tielve) is a listless young Spaniard bed-hopping his way through Europe. His quest to find his estranged British father lands him in an
inner-London squat also occupied by Vera (Déborah François), a heartbroken French fille similarly looking to fill an emotional void and orchestrating an unconventional
relationship with a grungy local. Freeze-frame sequences
evoke characters' long-lost memories of loved ones; wobbly hand-held filming
techniques suit the underground locale and add to the hipster sensibility.
Argentinean director Alexis Dos Santos's personal experience of bohemian London is apparent, but this is all a
bit wannabe-eccentric. Hostel parties and quirky culture clashes are amusing, but ultimately
the film lacks substance and relies on the
two-protagonists-meet-at-the-end formula. Unmade Beds is one to watch for a bit of youthful
passion and big city escapism, so long as you can take its arty-fartiness.
