Movie Extra pulls the trigger on an electrifying new series
Australia has a proud tradition of great TV exploring the fine line between good guy and bad guy – from Cop Shop to Wildside, Homicide to Prisoner, Phoenix to Underbelly, Blue Heelers to Blue Murder. For most Aussies it’s usually a case of: Good guys? Great. Bad guys? Better!
That’s what makes Small Time Gangster so special.
In hard man hero Tony Piccolo, Small Time Gangster gifts us both a good guy and a bad guy. To his wife and kids in Melbourne suburbia, Tony is the archetypal husband and father working as a “contract cleaner”. But to the underworld at large, Tony’s something very different – a brutal, ice-in-the-veins contract killer and standover thug whose only “cleaning” comes when he’s getting blood out of carpets and clothes… and off his own hands.
Of course, the fine line between good and bad always blurs. And when Tony’s family becomes aware of his “Family” connections, the chaos kicks off and the real fun begins.
Written and created by Gareth Calverley (Spy Shop) and Joss King (H2O), Small Time Gangster is directed by Jeffrey Walker whose credits include Rake, City Homicide and the upcoming Angry Boys (Chris Lilley’s new comedy series for HBO).
Small Time Gangster premieres on Movie Extra with a special double episode tomorrow night, Tuesday 19 April at 8.30pm
