St James Theatre
The St James Theatre is looking marvellous for its age. Built in 1912, the ornate façade of this grand old theatre is an indication of the wonders that grace her interior. Here you will find elaborate cherubs, plaster curlicues, gilded lyres, horns and harps and dancing cupids coming at you from every angle. Top touring productions are staged here – the old saying goes, “If it’s worth seeing, it’s on at the St James.”

Circa Theatre
As the arts capital of New Zealand, Wellington is proud to have the Circa among its ranks of theatres. Dedicated to cutting-edge drama, the Circa has staged hundreds of productions since launching in 1976 and has delighted locals and visitors eager to support local drama. Up to 20 shows a year are performed at the venue’s two theatres.

Embassy Theatre
The Embassy Theatre captured the world’s attention when it hosted the world premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in December 2003. However, Wellingtonians have been in love with this venue since it was built in 1924. Located in the heart of the city’s entertainment precinct, Courtney Place, the Embassy screens the latest movies, boasts a gorgeous interior and houses the hugely popular Blondini’s Café & Bar, where live jazz bands perform most weekends.

The Opera House

Comprising three levels – stalls, circle and grand circle – the Opera House is fitted out with some of the most beautifully ornate features you’re likely to see in any of Wellington’s entertainment venues. The Opera House stages touring productions, concerts, opera and ballet, keeping local theatre buffs well chuffed.
