Perched in the heart of the Blue Mountains at Echo Point, Lilianfels Blue Mountains Resort and Spa occupies an exquisite 19th century former residence. It's run by the guys behind the Observatory Hotel, and they've outdone themselves here. Visitors will find more than just a luxurious hotel to spend the night: they can dine on excellent cuisine, take a scenic walk through the Blue Mountains National Park, and explore the charming town of Leura.
Stay
The 85 superbly appointed rooms have old-world charm and new-world mod cons. The European country house is surrounded by two acres of English-style gardens, and many rooms overlook the gardens and majestic mountains. The view, along with the silk and organza linen, made it difficult to find the motivation to get out of bed. Though, knowing Darley's Restaurant was just downstairs, staying put was never an option.
Eat
Darley's recently received a second chef's hat and was named best NSW regional restaurant. Head Chef Hugh Whitehouse has a focus on seasonal produce for his contemporary cuisine. We fought our temptation to go for the degustation menu and opted instead for a three-course feast. My savarin of sugar-cured ocean trout and avocado, mud crab, ocean trout caviar, ginger, cucumber and fresh wasabi is simply one of the most appealing entrées I've ever seen; with each bite, a symphony of sweet, tangy, and biting flavours and textures played across my palate. My partner's suckling pig was another highlight, presented beautifully with a fine crisp skin.
Doing tea
High tea at Lilianfels is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Served either in the dining room or on the veranda overlooking the garden, the three tiers offer a selection of sandwiches, sweet desserts, and fresh scones. If you book ahead, you can also have your fortune told at a tea-leaf reading.
Activities
At the Spa, we indulged in the volcanic rock massage therapy. They use both hot and cold stones and essential oils, which is sheer indulgence. The relaxed and courteous staff are very attentive but not overbearing, and the environment is calm and soothing. On the active side of things, you can find a tennis court, heated indoor pool and a well-equipped gym. There are also Yoga, Pilates, and Tai Chi classes. Though with the mountains literally a stroll out the front gate, you could hire a mountain bike and ride a trail, or take a Wilderness Therapy Walk. For those staying a little longer, you can take a day trip out of town to see what else the mountains have to offer. A Mudgee Wine Country trip is a few hours north, or you could explore the Jenolan Caves, just 75 minutes away.
Getting there
It's a relatively straightforward 110km drive out of Sydney, and shouldn't take more than 90 minutes off-peak. Take the M4 out to the Blue Mountains, and then jump off the Great Western Highway at Leura. Head down Katoomba Street and you'll find them at the end on Lilianfels Avenue. You can also take a little longer and go via the lookout for the Three Sisters.
