This four-star boutique hotel was thought to be a lost cause when sisters Elizabeth and Susanne Gervay bought it back in 1992. But instead they set about transforming the crumbling, grand 1870s mansion into what it is today: an award-winning hotel offering sophisticated modern accommodation in comfortable old-world surroundings. All rooms are en suite, and there’s also an attached four-bed terraced house that can be rented in its entirety. Elizabeth is an artist and Susanne an author, so literary events and art exhibitions take place regularly. There’s a cosy lounge, an old-fashioned bar with a baby grand piano (played once a month by talented night porter Victor) and a sun terrace. Quaife’s restaurant is named after the original owner, founder of the colony’s medical association, and serves bistro-style dishes in generous portions. Three rooms are designated as pet friendly. Bar. Disabled-adapted rooms. Internet (wireless). No smoking. Parking (free). Restaurant. Room service. TV. Rates $158-$268 double. Rooms 36. Credit AmEx, DC, MC, V.
