Billabong Gardens

Bohemian, bright and arty, the decor at this Newtown hostel-motel is a patchwork of bright colours, exposed brick and crazy patterns. Set just off the bustling environs of King Street, it attracts artists and musos, even offering special deals for visiting bands, including space to store their equipment. The place is clean and all rooms have ceiling fans and wireless internet. Some rooms have TVs and fridges, but note that none of them have air-conditioning. Other pluses include a large modern kitchen, laundry, solar-heated pool, TV room and a lovely, leafy courtyard. Staff are extremely friendly and more than willing to help guests with everything from organising tours to finding work on an organic farm via the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms association. Internet (wireless). No smoking. Parking ($5). Pool (outdoor). TV (TV room). CityRail Newtown. Rates $23-$25 dorm; $69-$89 double. Rooms 36. Credit MC, V.
